The Tampa Bay Rays have signed 33-year old lefty swinging 1B Carlos Pena to a 1-year deal worth $7.25 million bucks. Pena played in 153 games for the Rays last year and he was 111 of 493 (.225 avg, .819 OPS) with 72 runs scored, 28 homers, 80 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He has played in 566 games in his first four years with the Rays and he is 461 for 1,935 (.238 avg, .884 OPS) with 330 runs scored, 144 homers, 407 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Pena has been to 1 All-Star Game, won 1 Gold Glove and he is the Rays’ all-time home run leader with 144 of them. Pena has now played in 1,226 games in his first 11 years in the majors and he is 982 for 4,113 (.239 avg, .838 OPS) with 631 runs scored, 258 homers, 730 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. This was a great signing for the Rays as Pena will add a lot of power to the lineup while providing the team with Gold Glove caliber D at 1B in 2012.
