The Tampa Bay Rays have placed switch-hitting shortstop Elliot Johnson on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 24th with a sprained left knee. Johnson has played in 28 games for the Rays so far this year and he is 17 for 66 (.258 avg, .715 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 2 homers, 8 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. The Rays have activated lefty swinging SS Reid Brignac from the bereavement list (death of his grandfather) ro replace Johnson on the active roster. Brignac has played in 35 games for the Rays so far this year and he is 17 for 100 (.170 avg, .390 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 0 homers and 6 RBIs. Brignac will likely share time at SS with Felipe Lopez until Johnson is ready to return to action. Lopez has played in 25 games for the Rays so far this year and he is 16 for 75 (.213 avg, .586 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 2 homers, 6 RBIs and 1 stolen base. This is a really bad break for Elliot Johnson who was getting his big chance to prove himself when he was injured.
