What in the world is wrong with B.J. Upton this season

Maybe B.J. Upton swings better when his shoulder hurts as he was awesome in the post season for the Rays in 2008. But he had off-season surgery to repair his shoulder and he hasn’t hit the ball well since. Upton has played in 40 games for the Rays this season and he is 32 for 169 (.189 avg, .569 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 2 homers, 9 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. His main problem is that it seems like he’s swinging for the fences quite often as he has whiffed 54 times already this season. If the Rays are going to continue to bat Upton in the leadoff spot he needs to start hitting the ball on the ground to take advantage of his speed.
