After last night’s debacle with Willy Aybar starting at shortstop the Rays decided to call up Ben Zobrist to play there until Jason Bartlett is ready to come back from an injured finger. Zobrist has played in 23 games for the Rays this season and he is 17 for 74 (.230 avg, .774 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 5 homers and 8 RBIs. This was the smart move for the Rays to make as they were considering playing Longoria at SS with Aybar at 3B. To make room on the active roster the Rays have sent down outfielder Jonny Gomes. Gomes has played in 69 games for the Rays this season and he was 26 for 143 (.182 avg, .681 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 7 homers and 22 RBIs. Gomes might get to come back if he plays well in AAA but his return might have to wait until September 1st if Rocco Baldelli is activated off the D.L. soon.
