The Rays have activated DH Cliff Floyd from the D.L. Floyd has played in 4 games this season for the Rays and he is 5 for 15 (.333 avg, 1.212 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 2 homers and 5 RBIs. Floyd replaces Nathan Haynes on the roster who has been designated for assignment. Haynes has played in 20 games for the Rays this season and he was 10 for 44 (.227 avg, .504 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 3 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. It will be interesting to see if Haynes will stick around with the Rays or become a free agent. Getting Floyd back should help the Rays kickstart the offense.

21-year old lefty starter Jake McGee will be a Devil Ray in the near future. He is the teams’ #3 rated prospect according to the Baseball America Prospect Handbook. McGee has started 6 games in AA-ball this season and he is 3-2 with a 4.20 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. McGee has whiffed 30 batters and only allowed 22 hits in 30 innings this year. McGee will likely be a fixture in the Rays’ rotation in the next couple of seasons.

A couple of key Tampa Bay Rays are off to slow starts with the bat

Akinori Iwamura and Carlos Pena are both off to bad starts for the Rays. Iwamura has played in 30 games this season for the Rays and he is 27 for 122 (.221 avg, .605 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 2 homers, 9 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. The Rays will have no choice but to take him out of the leadoff spot if he doesn’t start hitting soon. Carlos Pena was given a huge contract in the off season as the Rays showed a lot of faith in him. It appears as if he is pressing at the plate and it’s hurting his swing. Pena has played in 30 games for the Rays this season and he is 23 for 107 (.215 avg, .744 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 7 homers and 17 RBIs. Pena has also whiffed 35 times this season and he needs to improve on that.

Hammel has started 5 games for the Rays this season and he is 2-2 with a 4.88 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP.
